Wegovy (semaglutide) injection is an FDA-approved, once-weekly GLP-1 medication for adults with obesity, or adults with overweight who have at least one weight-related health condition. It is used together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Wegovy is also approved to lower the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with established heart disease and obesity or overweight. It is prescribed only after a licensed provider reviews your health history.
Semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Wegovy comes in single-dose pens of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg and 2.4 mg. Treatment starts at 0.25 mg once weekly and the dose increases every 4 weeks. The usual maintenance dose is 2.4 mg once weekly, or 1.7 mg if your provider recommends it.
Semaglutide activates the GLP-1 receptor, the same pathway your body uses to signal fullness after a meal, which can help reduce appetite. Inject Wegovy under the skin of your stomach, thigh or upper arm once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without meals. You can change the time of day and the injection site. Individual results vary.
Wegovy has a boxed warning about a possible risk of thyroid C-cell tumors. Do not use it if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). The most common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, headache and tiredness. Tell your provider right away about severe stomach pain that does not go away. Do not use Wegovy with other semaglutide products or other GLP-1 medicines. Stop Wegovy if you become pregnant, and at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.

Treatment starts at 0.25 mg once weekly. Every 4 weeks the dose steps up to 0.5 mg, then 1 mg, then 1.7 mg. After that, your provider sets your maintenance dose, usually 2.4 mg once weekly.
If your next scheduled dose is more than 2 days away, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is less than 2 days away, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on your regular day. If you miss 2 or more doses in a row, contact your provider, because your dose may need to be restarted at a lower strength.
Wegovy should not be used with other medicines that contain semaglutide or with any other GLP-1 medicine. Tell your provider about every medicine you take.
The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, headache, tiredness, indigestion, dizziness, bloating, burping, gas, heartburn and hair loss. Let your provider know if side effects are severe or do not go away.
Do not use Wegovy if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or if you have had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide.
Stop using Wegovy if you become pregnant. If you are planning a pregnancy, stop at least 2 months before you try to conceive, because semaglutide stays in the body for a long time.
