Wegovy (semaglutide) is an FDA-approved, once-weekly GLP-1 injection for long-term weight management, used together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Adults with obesity, or adults with overweight who have at least one weight-related health condition. A licensed provider reviews your health history to decide if it is right for you.
Inject one dose under the skin of your stomach, thigh or upper arm once a week, on the same day each week. You can take it at any time of day, with or without meals.
Treatment starts at 0.25 mg once weekly. Every 4 weeks the dose steps up to 0.5 mg, then 1 mg, then 1.7 mg. After that, your provider sets your maintenance dose, usually 2.4 mg once weekly.
If your next scheduled dose is more than 2 days away, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is less than 2 days away, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on your regular day. If you miss 2 or more doses in a row, contact your provider, because your dose may need to be restarted at a lower strength.
Wegovy should not be used with other medicines that contain semaglutide or with any other GLP-1 medicine. Tell your provider about every medicine you take.
The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, headache, tiredness, indigestion, dizziness, bloating, burping, gas, heartburn and hair loss. Let your provider know if side effects are severe or do not go away.
Do not use Wegovy if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or if you have had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide.
Stop using Wegovy if you become pregnant. If you are planning a pregnancy, stop at least 2 months before you try to conceive, because semaglutide stays in the body for a long time.
